CO2R Co-CEO, Hunter Lovins, participates with Sir Richard Branson, Bill Clinton and others at a Clinton Global Initiative event in New York City committing to impact global warming. "One of the most exciting moments of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) was when Sir Richard Branson announced a huge financial commitment to resolve the threat of global warming. Sir Branson runs the Virgin Atlantic Airways as well as a train company, among other businesses. At the CGI, Branson committed all profits from his transportation businesses, approximately $3 billion over the next several years, to investments in alternative fuel technologies and other efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. He said that Al Gore came to his house in England earlier this year, and convinced him that something needed to be done NOW. It has the potential to shift the paradigm for transportation worldwide." In August 2006, California became the first state in the nation to impose mandatory limits on greenhouse gas emissions, requiring a 25% cut in greenhouse gasses by 2020 that will affect companies from automakers to manufacturers. The state is the 12th largest carbon emitter in the world despite leading the nation in energy efficiency standards and its lead role in protecting its environment. The California Chamber of Commerce opposed the bill, but such business groups a A New Voice for Business supported the measure, stating that it would create jobs and help to launch a whole new industry in California. Many believe the legislation will be the turning point in the country's global warming policy.
